bout 800 bucks at Memory Express The motherboard wasn't my first choice really. They had an MSI board that was a pretty good performer and the same price with 4 sata ports, but the only one they had was fried. The dude said this Asus was pretty much the same, but when I started putting it all together, I noticed it only had 2 ports. I did have the sata care on hand though, so the problem sorted itself out. Port-wise, I have room for 2 more hd's, but for one I would need to mount in a 5 and what not bay. I think i have the adapters around here somewhere.
So, me and ckoo are in the process of moving everything over as we speak. Combined, we have around 90 gigs of music (some of which are redundant) another 70 or so of video files, and as for things like game files and applications, I couldn't really tell.. My 160 gig raid0 was getting pretty tight on space for the last couple of months though. Oh, I also have a Maxtor 200gig OneTouch external HD for backup. Grand total of space is not quite 1000 gigs. But, 500 gig Seagates have been a good price lately.
actually, when i get all the hardware issused sorted out i don't see a problem with running am ftp server. The 30 gig ide died (it came from the shop) so that got replaced with a new seagate 80 sata. That's the smallest hd that Memory Express sells in the regular ide/sata department. They have smaller notebook and SCSI's but that's just not a good idea. There's also some silly hardware conflicts goin on, and I had to sleep last night before they got figgered out. I don't know if ckoo got it or not yet. Anyway, I'll keep you posted.
ye old pioneer dvd drive was the cause of the sickness in the end. removed it and nothing bad has happened. it runs xp for the media compy part of the usage. the radeon card works nicely, and using remote desktop to start movies makes the living room cleaner with out having mouse, keyboard and monitor around. which is nice, cause until it was all set to go, i had my old 19" trinitron. when you turn that thing on, planes fall out of the sky. other than that, i'm busy filling it up with stuff, making room on my on hd.
does it need more? in my mind, for what it has to do, 512 is more than enough. it's going to sit there. hold on to files. play roughly 5-10 video files per week. stream a bit across the network. it holds up to both me and ckoo watching movies on different compys. the server itself is cabled to the router, since it sits 2 feet away, but we've been using the wireless linksys w/speed booster for a few months now.
